It was based on what people have said about paranormal experiences. Not real experiences of real people. So no, it wasn't a real story, and there was no Micah and Katie.
Fun fact: They used their real names for the movie.

Micah and Katie are real people, the names weren't changed for the movie. They are just actors playing themselves basically.
It was filmed by an independent director (who also wrote the script) it was shot in 5 weeks on a low budget of 11,000. It was picked up by Paramount and Dreamworks to distribute into theaters after garnering some attention at film festivals.

It was not based on a real story nor did it use real footage. It was filmed in the 'documentary' style made popular years ago by The Blair Witch Project.
But there is pretty crazy, real footage out there of paranormal activity. If you're interested do some research.
