Why do you think they said the economy was better because we had done better than expected during the summer?

I have my own opinion, what would yours be?

The economy is "doing better" because there has been real growth in GDP (gross domestic product) during the most recent quarter. Growth of, or retraction in, GDP is considered to be the most reliable indicator of the economy's health.

The Powers that Be has some reason for lying to us.

I doubt it is that they are dumb enough to see the truth, because they are smart. They have something planned for this economic collapse and not sure what it is. The Swine Flu Vaccines really make me think they have something big up their sleeves.

They say stuff like better than expected, and we keep losing jobs. It is the best the powers that be can do right now so that they are unaware of the truth. They are doing a heck of a job as a good percentage of the people are still clueless that the house of cards is falling.

The economy grew by 3% in July, August and September.

I think the biggest parts of it were the "cash for clunkers" and the "first time home buyer's credit". These programs encouraged higher sales of big ticket items.

(Both car sales and home sales are faultering right now. It's unclear whether our growth will continue, especially with unemployment still high. Remember that our unemployment rates for those same months got worse the whole time.)
