Do you think instant replay should be used to determine whether a player was safe or not?

Update:

In my opinion baseball has been called this way for decades and it would take a huge part of it's history away from the game. Foul balls- yes. but safe or not safe-no

If instant replay were used, it would have to only be in dead-ball situations. Baserunners react based on the on the field call of umpires and if you reverse a call, how the heck do you figure out what to do with the baserunners!

This of this - a runner is on second and a drive is hit to the outfield. The runner goes half way to third waiting to see if it's a catch. The outfielder makes a dive for the ball and appears to trap the ball, the makes a call for a hit and the runner takes off, rounds third and heads for home. The fielder gets up and throws home as the hitter heads for second. The shortstop cuts off the throw, throws to second and the batter is safe. Run scored, man on second.

But the replay shows that the ball was not trapped by the outfielder, it was caught. Now what? Does the defense get to make an appeal play and throw the runner out at second for not tagging up? How can you do that - if the ruling on the field had been a catch, the runner would have returned to second, so he would be out because of the wrong call on the field. Do you go ahead and allow the run, because the runner had acted on good faith on the umpire's call? I don't know, because if the shortstop had known the hitter was out, he wouldn't have cut off the throw and they might have gotten the runner at the plate. What a mess we've just created!

The alternative is to only use reply on such calls when there are no runners on base but that is kind of a strange system - used in some situations and not in others.

And there are lots of very close plays in each game. Is every one going to reviewed? Or will it be like football where they have coach challenges but only a certain number. So if the refs really mess up and make a dozen bad calls, that's okay??? See, it doesn't solve all the problems.

And I hate these football reviews where a guy seems to make a catch but then they microdissect whether he really had "possession" before he went out of bounds or if he made a "football move" before fumbling. It's ridiculous!

Similar to the way football works, I think each manager should get 2 challenges per game. There wouldn't be any penalty for a wrong challenge but really, it would take 5 seconds if the lead umpire had a walkie talkie and talked to an ump up in the booth and ask him what the call was.

Na , having to many instant replays would, take the human element out of the game there is no point of having empires if all of the calls are going to be reviewed however, u would be given a limited number of challenges per game it would be k, perhaps 1for regular innings and 1 extra for extra innings

yes i think on really close plays that the ump can't decide they should go to replay, but baseball is so long so if a manager says i want a replay it could go on for 9 hours instead but on foul balls i yes absolutely but only if it's really close

Absolutely! As they said on ESPN this morning, the time spent to determine whether or not the player was safe would have been less time than how long it took for the manager to come out and argue the call.

I think each team should be allowed ONE instant replay call for each game. If it was like football... games would go on for days.

im sick of this debate. Football has replay are calls still messed up? of course they are. Games are played fast and poop happens. Crying over bad calls is old and boring. The great ones in the past rise above it and that's why they are champions.

GOD IM SICK OF THE WHINERS

No on both. for the fact of the matter you cannot change the umpire call without him asking for help first.

Yes, if that's what it takes to get the correct call made, then definitely use it.
