Legalize drugs - people do less drugs?
The EU released its latest drug report today. The report offers statistics on traditional drug consumption across Europe, showing that the Dutch are among the lowest users of marijuana or cannabis, despite their country's well-known tolerance of the drug. Among adults in the Netherlands, 5.4 percent used cannabis, compared with the European average of 6.8 percent. SMOKING POT IS LEGAL IN THE NETHERLANDS, AND YET THE DUTCH HAVE THE LOWEST USE. A lesson for other countries?
Yes, it's technically illegal in the Netherlands, but it's de facto legalized (regulations placed on it are no more restrictive than those on alcohol or tobacco in the US)

There are other reasons, such as demographics, tradition and customs is also a factor that is very hard to measure.
But it is noted and probably the case, if marijuana was legalized, we could see a reduction, or higher use of it because people transferring their drug use from harder drugs to this soft one. People will get stoned no matter what, why not let them get stoned on something far less harmful to society and themselves, instead of what we are doing now? I think it would be great, instead of getting a bottle of Jack Daniels at the liquor store, I buy a 1/4 ounce of good home grown weed.

I have thought for over 30 years now that some drugs (inc pot) should be made legal, supplied through licensed premises by licensed persons and subjected to mark up and VAT to pay the costs and any profit paid into the exchequer. This would mean that users and their useage are monitored and pull the mat out from under illegal suppliers, also radically reduce crime such as theft done to pay street prices.
With illicit drug dealing being the World's 4th largest economy and a large number of jobs in the "white" economy e.g. Police, Customs and Excise etc. depending on the illegal drug trade continuing I don't see legalisation occurring.

To clarify, smoking pot is not legal in the Netherlands, it is decriminalized and generally tolerate, but still has legal restrictions. Not that I disagree with this prerogative by any means, and of course the example of the Netherlands should be a lesson for other countries such as the United States. Draconian drug prohibition doesn't work, and moreover it is contrary to the concept of a nation of free individuals. Why is it acceptable to wreck one's body while participating in some form of sport such as football or snowboarding whilst it is unacceptable to wreck one's body by ingesting drugs? It doesn't make any sense to me.

Smoking pot is NOT legal in the Netherlands. You just won't be punished for doing it.
However, in Portugal you will not be punished for possession of ANY drugs. If caught the drugs are confiscated, and the user is given a 'dissuasion committee'. Portugal has since seen a fall in drug addiction and HIV infection and has had seen the number of people in drug rehab double. Drug trafficking is still illegal though.
The fact that not only is weed legal but so is crack and yet drug addiction has STILL fallen says a lot for those saying "people will start taking other illegal drugs instead". They aren't taking them BECAUSE they're illegal.

It doesn't always work this way. Marijuana is legal for people who posses a medical card in california and they smoke WAY more of it there than in other states around the US.
Perhaps the Dutch people just don't have as much of an interest in the drug as other Europeans?

Nope. there are literally thousands of murders dedicated international with out any use or involvement of drugs. There are a procedures more suitable motives that folk kill one yet another than in simple terms drug involvement. case in point: funds, possessions, authentic sources and land, coverage claims, non secular superiority, political supremacy, sociopathic and psychopathic tendencies, serial killers. those are certainly some examples. in case you've been searching for a more suitable certain and exact answer on your question with regards to drugs and legalization contained in the U. S., case in point, perhaps you may streamline your question more suitable. there are more than a number of human beings that use this web site who're no longer American and performance a more suitable international-huge view.

I actually thought about this quite a bit, I don't think they'll ever legalize anything other than pot which we all know is the gate way drug... If they legalize pot then I personally think the rise in use of other drugs will go up and I believe less people will smoke pot but like I said, I think there will be a downside to it as well...
