Eclipse: in the last chapter Edward?

tells Bella something about the relative ages of Carlisle and Esme, trying to convince her to wait before being changed. It sounded like Esme was older in human age than Carlisle.

In the translation I read in my own language, this sentence does not make sense. I believe there must be a mistake in the translation.

Can anybody copy this part for me in English?

Actually, when Esme was turned into a vampire, she was 26 years old, and Carlisle was only 23 when he was changed. Carlisle's age was given when Edward told the story of how Carlisle became a vampire but I think this was the first time that Esme's age was mentioned. The actual section reads: (open quote)

Edward lay next to me and held my hand.

"August thirteenth?" he asked casually after a few minutes of comfortable silence [this is the date that Bella has given Alice as the latest possible date for Bella and Edward's wedding].

"That gives me a month till my [19th] birthday. I didn't want to cut it too close."

He sighed. "Esme is three years older than Carlisle -- technically. Did you know that?"

    I shook my head.

"It hasn't made any difference to them."

(close quote) Edward is trying to convince Bella not to worry about preempting her 19th birthday--she doesn't want to be more than a year older than Edward was when he was changed, and he wants her to stay human as long as possible.

I just read that chapter this morning. It said something like "Did you know, esme is really 3 years older then carlisle?" He was trying to tell bella that age doesn't matter, by telling her esme is older by 3 years then carlise. Make sense?

  • Esme was older than Carlisle before she was changed. She's frozen forever at 28, while Carlisle is 23. However, Carlise has lived a longer time than her. he was born in the 1600s while Esme was born later.

Edward was trying to show Bella that a few years doesn't matter, and that she should wait a while to be changed.

He sighed. "Esme is three years older than Carslile - technically. Did you know that?"

    I shook my head.

"It hasn't made any difference to them."

My voice was serene, a counterpoint to his anxiety. "My age is not really that important. Edward, I'm ready. I've chosen my life - now i want to start living it."

adding to what piggylove said i think it's because Edward stays the same age and they were both 17 in twilight right? so three years later cause Bella is not a vampire she still ages while Edward is still 17 so in eclipse Bella is what 19?

    Do you get it?
