Learly about St. Thomas excursion because it says you must carry passport!?
I'm going on a cruise soon and i am trying to decide which excursion to pick and the one i like the most is putting me off, since it says all guests must carry valid passports. The excursion involves snorkling and swimming, so where would we be leaving our passports. This is the only excursion saying this, why??? Why would we need to carry them? I think this is a BAD idea, but i like the excursion... what should i do?

They just might ask for a passport when you are coming back through the port. I am sure you can just show a travel document or passcard. I went there but can't remember if they ask for it. What you can do it to still go on the cruise but you might not be able to leave the ship. You can snorkel and swim in all the rest of the islands.

Maybe the excursion is stopping in British Virgin Island waters [or stopping there for lunch or something], in which case you would need a passport. You leave your passport with the rest of your "stuff" on the boat. Wouldn't be a bad idea to put it in a ziplock baggie. And be sure you have a copy of your passport to leave in the safe in your room, just in case.

A few of the cruise ships docking in St Thomas take passengers to The Baths on Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands, in which case you will need your passport to enter the BVI. It is well worth a visiting, the cruise line should be organised enough to look after your passport for you while you swim.

If you are American you don't need a passport to go to St. Thomas. I really like touring the islands on their little buses. They honk their horns at all their friends. You should try going to Coki Beach and rent a jet ski. I did that in 1998 and I really enjoyed it. Also, the Dockside Bar is located right next to the cruise ships. I enjoy a good rum drink while listening to Calypso music on their radio.

the answers that refer to trips going to the BRITISH Virgin Islands are correct.....you are going to British islands and have to have a passport to a) get into the BVIs ( Jost van Dyke, Tortola, Virgin Gorda The Baths) and b) get back into the US VIs ( STT). The boat tour operator wont even let you aboard in STT w/o a passport.

Just so you know:
- St. Thomas is a hell hole.
- Tortola is a waste of time.
Enjoy your cruise.
