I have a nasty cold, my dad has some ideas of how to make it better?

My dad seems to think being in bed and in the house are not good ways to treat this and sends me out for fresh (freezing cold) air and makes me move around the house instead of staying in bed.

Could you please convince him this is incorrect

A cold is a virus. To get rid of a virus your body needs to fight it. This takes energy. It is always best to rest when you are unwell and let your body focus on fighting the virus.

If you are outside in the cold your body has to use energy to keep itself warm and this is energy that is best used to fight the virus.

There is no actualy treatment for a cold. Fresh air wont cure it and neither will staying active.

Colds suck and the only cure is time. I think rest is a good idea too but there's probably no need to stay in bed all day. Just take it a bit easy that's all.

Some activity is good for the body. It stops congestion in the lungs and keeps everything running smoothly.

Don't stay in bed all day, keep active but tone it down a bit.

While moving around will help prevent pneumonia and move lymph fluid around (cleaning out waste and germs) it will not cure a cold. A cold is a virus and must run its course. You can take over the counter cold medications to help you with unpleasant symptoms.

Rule of thumb for runners, if your cold is from the neck up, you can continue to run and work out. From the chest down, take time off.

Water is important for people with a cold. You need to be hydrated. This will help heal the body and provide moisture to thin out mucus. Mucinex and medications like it will also help thin out mucus but it only works in a properly hydrated body.

    Good luck

Its good to walk around just to clear things up occasionally but you should be staying in bed most of the time to recover.

Hey man, you haven't been on Answers forever, I thought you were dead! hahaha, jk

Well, you can't cure a cold, it will go away on it's own. Just rest and get lots of water
