S 373 python ban! S 373 python ban!?

I want to know Every ones opinions please. I for one am of course against this.

This bill is will add all pythons to the Lacy Act, is currently under mark up to add Other boids as well.

Secondly for those that oppose,i have you contacted committee members and/or your senators.

Update:

Ashley and any one else that thinks that way. This is No different if not worse than BSL. It uses scare-mongering. I guess we should outlaw dogs they cause more injuries and deaths in a month, than large boids in year. There were 23 fatal dog attacsk for 2008, there are only 12 deaths for boids in 40 years.

You realize that this is one of many bills that animal right groups like PETA and HSUS have pushed to end the "slavery" of pets and livestock. One of these bills that lucky got dropped was HR669. This bill targeted all non-native species, which included most rodents, birds fish and reptiles. Only after revision was dogs, cats, and common live stock added to the accepted list.

I have been in the herp hobby over 20 year, I had boas for 18 of those. I have kept many other animals thourgh my life that would have been bannned by HR669. This bill can put my wife and many family members out of a job, from a well know name - Neodesha Plastics.

Burmese pythons have colonized the Everglades from either released or escaped individuals. They are not likely to survive in the wild anywhere but S. Fla. and Hawaii (where they do not yet live. The people representing those states want to ban the importation or breeding of pythons. A few panic-mongers go along with them.

It would make more sense to do this on a state level so as not to infringe as heavily on the rights of herpetoculturists.

USARK has full details on S373. It has made it to the floor at this time and is awaiting amendments. The Humane Society of the United States wants to place all python species on the bill as well as some boa species including the redtail. This will make it illegal to import, export or transport across state lines and animal listed on the law. Basically your pet ball python will now be illegal. I took the time to fax and call all the senators listed at the USARK website and I urge any snake owners to do the same. Voters count and if you make it where they don't think they'd be re-elected if they helped pass this bill then they will vote against it. HR7811 or whatever the last designation was never made it to the floor due to the 85,000 letters from reptile owners. With phone calls and faxes we can hopefully get this bill knocked down completely or at least ammended to only include import of the 5 large boids.

ive heard people talking about this issue, what does the ban state? i really havent done any research on it?

  • People(other then zoos, etc.) shouldn't be able to keep large snakes as pets. They are a wild animal and most people can't house them properly anyways.
