It's possible to do this, but you didn't give a model number. Check the back of your surround sound, if it has a optical or coaxial digital input, then you might be in business. The truth is, the majority of these all in one surround sound systems are fairly closed and don't offer much in the way of upgrades. I've seen more options in the higher end more expensive all in one systems like the Sony ES stuff for example.
That's why I always favor building your own system with traditional components like a receiver, dvd or blu ray player, speakers etc.
Anyway if your surround sound will handle a digital input, you'll use that do decode dolby and dts that are streamed inside the new HD dolby and dts soundtracks, your surround sound will decode the old versions. Then run the blu ray via HDMI to the TV, if your TV does not have HDMI, component (three colors) can handle 1080i and 720p.

A HTIB will not do what you want, they will only play surround sound from the blu ray player that comes with the system. They are not flexable. Your best bet would to save enough money so that you can buy a good receiver and some good speakers. Stay away from a HT IB.

Thats the problem dvd surround sound systems you can't add any thing to them. You need an A/V receiver to hook up the blu-ray player using hdmi cables.

Connect optical cable from Blu-ray player to sound system for audio if your system has one.
