International Retirement Destinations for Liberals?

This is not a joke. My parents want to retire abroad but they don't want an area full of conservative expats, as many of the Latin American communities tend to be. Anybody know of good retirement havens that have lots of liberals ("leftists" for you non-Americans)? How is Panama for this?

During the two previous administrations many "liberal" Americans left the USA and quite a few landed in Panama.

Asked why, they cited their dislike for the conservative policies of the Bush administration. There were and are Republicans here in Panama but it seemed like there were not nearly as many as there were liberals.

Now that there is a "liberal" in the White House, a lot of conservatives are fed up with the change in direction and are leaving the USA, inevitably, some are coming to Panama.

Most of the Americans living permanently in Panama live in Boquete, in Chiriqui province. You will find a good mix there of liberal as well as conservatives and libertarians.

At expat parties, when or if the subject of American government comes up, you can be surprised at who reveals themselves to be liberal or conservative, by the approvals or disapprovals they state regarding current issues. Here in the city, I was frequently surprised by how liberal the people were and how many there were.

Now that times have changed, the immigration has changed. How many conservatives will come here is anybody's guess. But right now the Liberals are in the majority, in my view. Your parents would find many friends in Boquete.

But i don't think ideologies played a major role in choices made by expats....according to above sources.

in India ,states like West Bengal and Kerala are more leftist, but there are very few American expatriates in india...most of them in places like Goa,mumbai. In 2002, one widely-cited estimate stated that 60,000 Americans lived in India. However, exact numbers were difficult to come by because many did not register with the US embassy.

In Asia japan is a liberal society, but their culture is different from the west. Philippines has very good relations with USA...,then Thailand.
