1. a. All you have to do is add the amounts together. First change 2 and 1/2 to 5/2 and change 3 and 2/3 to 11/3. So you have 5/2+1/4+11/3+8/1. To add these together, you have to get a common denominator, which in this case will be 12. So 5/2=(5*6)/(2*6) or 30/12. 1/4=(1*3)/(4*3) or 3/12. 11/3=(11*4)/(3*4) or 44/12. 8/1=(8*12)/(1*12) or 96/12. Now you have 30/12+3/12+44/12+96/12. This gives you 173/12 or 14 and 5/12 cups
b. 8 cups of water and 5/2 cups of flour. So it would be 8 divided by 5/2. When dividing by a fraction, all you are doing is multipying by the inverse. So 8/1 divided by 5/2 is equal to 8/1*2/5, which gives you 16/5 or 3 and 1/5.
2. a. Add 1/8 to 2/3 to see what is spent. 3/24+16/24=19/24. So 5/24 is left for the grandparents.
b. 1/8 of 200 is 200/1*1/8=200/8. 200 divided by 8 gives you 25. So he spent $25 on his sister.

ok, for the first one you have to find a common denominator between all the fractions that are being added. such as 12, cuz when you multipy 6 by 2 it equals 12, 4 and 3=12. Then put 2/12 and 8/ 12. add the numerators up, and simplify when needed. Part b you need to divide 8 by 2 1/2... i think.. that's all i'm giving you cuz i don't wanna think that much right now.. lol

For number 1, convert all the fractions to improper fractions (numerator is bigger than denominator) and then find the Lowest Common Denominator (LCD- all denominators are the same). Then add them up. For 1b, divided the amount of water by the amount of flour.
For number 2, multiply each fraction by $200 to get 2a. For 2b, find the LCD for both fractions then subtract from 1 to find the fraction that is left for his grandparents. Multiply that fraction by $200.

for a on #1 just make the fractions to decimals. Then the answer for 1b it's 5.5 cups.
i dont know what to do with 2a but the answer to 2b is $25 for his sister.
