is Willie Nelson's music considered "country" or "folk"?
I thought he was a country singer but one of my friends is insisting he's a folk singer... any Willie Nelson fans who can solve this for me?

....Willie is a country artist. His form of country combines country-folk-blues to make his sound.Over the years he has contributed to the country scene as both a writer and entertainer. He has made innovations to this genre of music from his classic "Crazy" to being instrumental in the development of the "Outlaw" movement in country to todays concerts he is still country to the core.He has and still has an effect on country artist from the "Honky Tonk" sounds to "main Stream" to the "Pop" country sounds.
He is country and has been, but in todays market some people think he is too old school to be called country. His musical relationships with the folk and blues world has made some people classify him folk. But Willie is PURE country.

Being a country artist doesn't exclude you from being a folk artist, but Willie is possibly the last true Country artist still kicking.

Willie Nelson is one of many or not so many musicians, singers I listen to. He can play many genres from country, blues, Tex Mex, to ballads so to classify him in one genre of music will not give you a picture of a complex artist as is Willie.

In the 40s and 50s the terms "country" and "folk" were use interchangeably. In fact, the first "country song" Grammy went to a FOLK song ("Tom Dooley" by the Kingston Trio).
