Why the lies and greed and selfishness by some customers?
I work in a customer service, (hospitality), and 70% of the customers lie about everything, their accommodation, lies about the fuel level of the rental cars they are returning, make up any excuse possible to get some kind of discount. WHY?. These customers all work for corporates, they do not do a labor work, yet they think simply lie just to earn a discount. A day ago, an older man had to tell me he was not happy with his rental car, he said "I was forced to get this small car". The guy kept the car 2 days and returned to exchange it a larger vehicle, his gain?. To get a full size car for the price of the small car. Selfish to pay $ 25.00 extra for a full size. SOB. What is the world coming to?. Daily, some customers clearly lie to me about their fuel level so they are not charged for fuel.
What causes someone with a decent job to lie to save few bucks?
I am VERY interested to understand psychologically why they do what they do?

Nowadays, it seems like people don't feel guilty about lying or getting over on someone if it's a business. It's like, they feel like if they're not directly hurting an individual, they're not hurting anyone. Maybe they feel like businesses make enough money anyway, so their little lie isn't hurting anyone. I think the justify it by saying, "it's just gas", or "it's not like i'm hurting anyone".
Our society has people so screwed up that people feel like they're not even responsible for their own decisions. People sue over everything now days: if you slip on ice in front of the business, the business can be sued for negligence; if you get into a car accident after getting drunk at a bar, you can sue the bar for serving you too much alcohol; lawyers are all over TV begging people to join class action law suites about just about anything imaginable.
I honestly don't fully understand the psychology behind this behavior because i'm the type of person whose more likely to pay for extra gas that I didn't use because I didn't pay attention to how much was in the car when I got it, than to spend time trying to get over on the company.

A lot of people believe that the world owes them everything. They are selfish and self serving, and don't care who they hurt or what it costs to save them a couple bucks. They feel they deserve that discount, and will do anything to get it.
