A Muslim is to respond by giving Dawah to him/her by explaining the whole Fiqh behind imitating non muslims and celebrating their festivals. In other words, you must do dawah and explain in a manner which Rasul (saws) would have taught the Sahabah (ra).
A Muslim must not say same to you or merry christmas etc...
Focus thought - Celebrating is a kind of believing.

Non-Muslim: Happy Holidays!
Muslim: Ditto
Use the same technique for the Christmas scenario.

It is wrong to say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays.
The least you can do as a Muslim is not respond and if you are able to you should explain to them why you can not wish them Merry Christmas.

happy holidays----> thanks, happy holidays to you too
have a merry christmas -----> merry christmas to you:)
i'm in Indonesia, the largest muslim population in the world, should be the role model of all muslim in the world, coz we're living in peace, side by side with Christians, Catholics, Jews, Buddhist, Hindus and the chinese tao etc.
many extremist came from outside Indonesia try to ruin this. They even provoke to the muslim NOT to give greetings to other religion's celebrations. i urge my fellow true muslims not to accept this kind of move. let's live side by side in peace, respect each other and enjoy the world together as one

There is no harm in wishing someone a Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays
Many people I know who are not Muslim have wished me a Happy Eid!
As Muslims we must show good Morality and be kind to people of all faiths

if an unbeliever greets me slm alykm and i don't know what is in their hearts, i greet them back what the teaching to us is to say w alykm. And if they(non muslim) greet me merry christmas or eid mubarak with bad or good intent, i 'd say w alykm.
but if they do not know i am a muslim, i 'd say i am a muslim and wish them happy holidays

I normally say ''and the same to you''... or ''Merry Christmas to YOU''....People know I am a Muslim and still send me Christmas cards lol they feel bad thinking they are leaving you out but I am glad to be shot of the whole affair to be honest. I do however see no harm in telling those whom the holiday is important too, that I hope they enjoy their holiday. I have many Christian and Atheist relatives and friends who wish me a Happy Eid and say Eid Mubarak and give my children gifts. There is no harm down showing others you respect their holiday for them even though its not for you...

Assalaam Alaikum Brother
Explain that you do not celebrate Christmas, it goes against what you believe. In regards to happy holidays there is nothing wrong in that , hence reply hope you have great holidays too...
And Allah (swt) knows best.
