Drive eraser on parted magic bootable iso is a good one.
Or you can download the (ultimate boot CD) UBCD and run the dariks boot and nuke
These applications require that you can make a bootable iso on a CD. Useful as this is what is required to make a bootable iso so you can load linux.
I don't really understand why you need to clean your hard drive. A new linux install will format the hard drive with the ext3,4, or reiserFS.
The two best linux choices are ubuntu and mint. Ubuntu is a great OS although you will have to use the terminal to add most of the restricted software and drivers that ubuntu does not come with like flash and audio/DVD codecs (as it tries to be completely open-source). Mint has all the work done for you as far as enabling all the non-free software and codecs. Mint is a derivation built off ubuntu linux, and its guts are the same.
Personally, I think it is good for a new linux user to learn how to use the terminal and figure out how linux works, that is why I suggest ubuntu.
If you seriously want to start using linux, buy a book. I suggest Beginning Ubuntu Linux 4th ed. by Keir Thomas , Andy Channelle and Jaime Sicam # ISBN13: 978-1-4302-1999-6
# ISBN10: 1-4302-1999-8 ; published by Apress, Aug 2009.
