Why would Jesus say you can divorce your wife for adultery when it was required that she be killed.?
Lev 20:10 And the man that committeth adultery with [another] man's wife, [even he] that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

Jesus never said it was OK to divorce your wife for adultery. I'm not going to get into the whole divorce question here, but what Jesus actually said was that anyone who divorces his wife except for immorality and remarries commits adultery. The Greek text is explicit. We owe this hermeneutic blunder to Martin Luther who first suggested that adultery was grounds for divorce. I'm Protestant, but the Catholic Church has got it right on this issue.
Think of the historical context behind this verse. What did Joseph do when he discovered Mary's pregnancy? He sought a divorce even though they were only engaged. He reasoned that Mary had committed fornication (fooled around) and so sought to break off the engagement. The one thing Jesus was absolutely not doing was setting aside the Mosaic law of adultery. What he is actually doing is expanding it-- pointing folks back to God's creative intent for marriage.

Question for you:
Christ came to fufill the law no?
He admended a few laws no?
Did you know that men were mistreating the law of divorce back then and dismissing their wives for illegitimate reasons?
Did you know Christ wanted to fix that?
Did you know that Christ also brought about FORGIVENESS?
With forgiveness, how can you forgive if you destroy right away?
Did Christ not die and become the final sacrifice (ending the previous law of sacrifice of animals) upon his death?
If so, then I am under the impression that Christ restipulated the law to say that only a wife found to be cheating on her husband could be divorced (so enough of the tossing Suzy to get little young Sarah over there) and since forgiveness also came about people were no longer in the post of killing others for sins, since well, doesnt everybody sin.
As Christ said "He who is blamesless cast the first stone" He brought this new teaching to the people of Israel. See, how he prefected the laws?
So, for men with cheating wives, they can divorce them. Women with cheating husbands can seperate from their husbands and return home but the man still has to take care of her.
Source(s): Good question. Its means you are critically thinking about the bible. That is exactly what you have to do to really get wisedom. Ask questions. - 1 decade ago
Actually, Jesus never said it was "okay". He said that Moses permitted divorce but that people shouldn't get divorced.
Mark 10:1-12 (from biblegateway.com)
1 Then He arose from there and came to the region of Judea by the other side of the Jordan. And multitudes gathered to Him again, and as He was accustomed, He taught them again.
2 The Pharisees came and asked Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” testing Him.
3 And He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?”
4 They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to dismiss her.”
5 And Jesus answered and said to them, “Because of the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. 6 But from the beginning of the creation, God ‘made them male and female.’[a] 7 ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, 8 and the two shall become one flesh’;[b] so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”
10 In the house His disciples also asked Him again about the same matter. 11 So He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. 12 And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

I don't know, but the Bible also says these great words of wisdom:
A man with crushed or severed genitals may not enter the assembly of the Lord. -- Deut. 23:1.
No church for John Wayne Bobbitt, but what do you think this means for guys who sit on their nads really, really hard?
For everyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother. His blood shall be upon him. -- Lev. 20:9
Looks like when your kids call you curse words, you're gonna have to kill them. You want to follow the word of God, don't you?
Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard. Lev. 19:27
The evils of shaving... you should ask for forgiveness RIGHT NOW. If your face doesn't look like it belongs in ZZ Top, you are committing a SIN.

Nothing like a good stoning down at the Salty Harbor for Friday fish night... that shrimp ring is gonna ensure you meet your maker shortly, son!
I just love how fundamentalists LOVE to quote the Bible when it suits their needs, but will gladly shave and eat shrimp all damn day long without wishing to be persecuted for it.
Your religion is based on the worship of a cosmic Jewish zombie who is his own father, and you revere him by cannibalizing his flesh and blood. Rad.

Many of the Old Testament laws became obsolete when Jesus appeared on the scene. He spelled out some things when talking to the multitudes, and later after he rose from the dead he had a long discussion which included everything about himself and probably the changes on the road to Emmaus when they didn't even recognize him. I can understand why he didn't want them to recognize him now---he wanted them to concentrate on what he was going to expound to them. Afterwards they knew it was him when he left.

Jesus never stated that
Mat 19:7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?
Mat 19:8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
Mat 19:9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except [it be] for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

Because Jesus is God and changed the rules even if he didn't say to divorce your wife. But because he has the authority to change things, this would be one of the sins he saved adulterer from. There is no point to kill a person if your going to save them from the sin.

And what is the purpose of this question? What did YOU hope to gain?
