i know someone who watches tv and doesnt have cable, dish, or the box, but wont tell any one how they do it. anyone else out there know how

Yes, local TV stations broadcast HDTV over the air. Over the air HD antennas are available most anywhere and can be mounted inside your attic, and as long as you live close enough to a metro area that has it's own local channels, you will be able to pick up TV in high definition.

Just hook up a ^good* rooftop antenna to an HDTV and you will most likely get a bunch of channels with HD content. If you don't have an HDTV, get a converter box, which has the digital tuner, but outputs SD for your analog TV.
