what do you have to do to retire?

my father in law wants to retire in a couple of months and doesnt know exactly how to do it. like, does he have to fill out papers or what exactly does he need to do?

    He needs to go to the HR department or union office. They know the ropes.

    Well, assuming that he is currently employed, all he needs to do to retire is to resign from his job (quit). Once he resigns, his employer will give him any paperwork he needs to fill out.

    The complicated part is figuring out how to replace his income for the next 20 or 30 years, depending on his age and health.

    If your father-in-law is at least age 62, he can apply for Social Security benefits. He can apply online if he wants to. I've include a link to the Social Security website.

    Also, if he is at least age 65, he can also apply for Medicare. I've included a link below for information on how to apply for Medicare, which covers his medical expenses.
