Hmm - some of what the first respondent says is true - some police are brutes etc, and some are trigger-happy - some are pretty good guys, but trapped in a 'police culture' of lyng to protect your own **** and that of your fellow cop. The current crop have been brought up on TV, where every episode is SWAT teams with mega-artillery taking down some organised and heavily armed group that's out to get them personally.

What a load of S*&t! The vast majority of police work is routine, and something like 3% of US cops ever draw their weapon in the line of duty, so all this TV crap is very damaging to their image of what they should be doing. It also gives an easy out for some not very competent cops, who can't manage a situation, and therefore resort to force too readily.

As has been said of pepper sprays and even increasingly tasers, the weapon of last resort rapidly becomes the weapon of first choice, and the whole thing is then justified by charging the injured victim with assaulting police etc. In extreme cases, the 'throw-down' weapon ploy is used to implicate the tasered, shot etc person.

Much of this sort of thing is covered in my coming book 'All Honourable Men' (plug, plug again).

A big point raised by the first respondent is the practice of police being investigated by police - now nobody really believes in that, do they?

I'm not familiar with this case. What's happening there? Are you talking about the police shooting people who are sometimes innocent? Because you know that they do that.

all over the world the police are sadists and brutes and trigger happy

after every shooting there is enquiry to justify the firing. the reports are filed and forgotten

the whole thing is a close shop

the investigator in one case is investgattee in other case
