Grinding sound when I put the car in park?

I have an automatic transmission Ford Mustang that's about 9 years old. When I drove the car this morning, it was making a horrible grinding sound every time I put the car in park. It's never done that before. We've had some horrible weather here (lots of ice & snow), so it possible this is related to the cold weather or is it something more serious? Anyone have any ideas what this could be? Thanks!

Update:

It made the grinding sound from the time I shifted from drive into park, and then it stopped. The car was at a complete stop in a parking space that is now clear of ice, so I don't think the back tires were spinning at all.

You didnt say how long the noise lasted...so just a crazy outside the box thought here. If you have lots of ice, is it possible that your rear wheel(s) were spinning on the ice a little when you brought the car to stop?

If they were, this would explain why you heard a grinding noise when you switched the gear shifter from Drive to Park.

the park function is by a detent (tongue) fitting into a slot on the output shaft of the tranny. Ice could be a worry iff tranny cold, but more likely the output seal has failed and some dirt got into the mechanism. If red tranny oil under car in morning, thats most likely cause. or detent breakup. recommend fix as park brakes aren't reliable & dirty tranny oil rips them to bits.
