Curry powder is a blend of spices. There are many different blends out there for sale. You can even make your own blend. That being said, I can't imagine anyway one could become ill by eating curry powder blended with another food item. I often mix it with yogurt and use it as a dip. So... yer grama is wrong this time.

Ok calm down. All the ingredients in curry powder are safe to eat raw. Dry spices don't tend to carry bacteria or other pathogens (just like us, microbial nasties don't do too well without water, and curry powder usually has some salt, which they like even less). However, it could make you sick if you eat too much of it because your stomach might be irritated by the spiciness.

Sorry, your grandmother is wrong. There's nothing in standard curry powder that would -- with normal usage -- make you ill. On the other hand, curry powder in plain water sounds pretty gross, so maybe she just didn't have the heart to tell you that.
