I think it is because we are obsessed at how perfect the personalities of Edward and Jacob are. Their personalities differ and it makes it a big competition between "Team Jacob" or "Team Edward". Do you wanna be a Vampire or a Werewolf? That's the main question that we ask. I'm a hybrid ^^ lol But for real, its just that we wish that there was an actual world like that because it is caught between realism and fantasy. It just all seems like it IS real and that it really happened in Forks or currently happening. Vampires and Werewolves exist? Haha fantasy becomes reality in Twilight =) I hope this helps! ^^

Good question, cause the movies are horrible.
Maybe the books brain washes teen girls somehow and now they are zombies storming the theaters.
