disk read error on startup?
a friends computer gets that error on start up. the HD passes the quick daignostics. could there be a problem in the boot sector and that is why it isn't loading. if so, does he need a new HD?

Run dskchk, this will repair it for you,
To run it you either need the pc to have a repair function, or you need a Windows disk (any works) And run the recovory console
