How can I help my friend?

He talks to someone that no one can see, prohibits himself from doing things because of this invisible figure, and tries to tell me he exists and wants to give me things. He's otherwise intelligent, but I'm really scared for his mental well-being. This imagined relationship is really hindering his ability to properly perceive the real world. What should I do to help him, and how should I voice my concern to him?

Try and get him to talk to you about his past. See if you can dig any kind of traumatic experience out of him. If you can, then he probably has a fear ascociated with this or another event that he hasn't been able to cope with, and created this imaginary entity in an effort to protect himself from it. If you can get him to talk about his fears, it brings him one step closer to dealing with them rather than running from them which sounds like what he's been doing.

Most likely he is suffering from schizophrenia or doesn't know how to deal with the immense stress that he is facing from something else. You should tell him how you feel about his actions and how they affect everyone around him.
