How to crop photos from 7x5 to 4x5?

I think i've got the size right, i'm not sure.

I printed some photos off today and asked the assistant if the Kodak printing machine was set to the normal size (4x5 I think, the usual normal size of photos) Anyway she said yes, but they've come out as big 7x5 ones and they won't fit in my photo album so i'll have to cut them down so they get ruined then.

Is there any way I can do it without making too much of a mess of them? I'm really upset that this has happened because i've just spent nearly £14 on 28 photos that now look rubbish because of her. I know I should have checked the size myself but I trusted her when she said they were already set to the normal size.

I've measured the size of my other photos that are 4x5 so i'm gonna try and do that with the ones i've just printed off, or won't that work at all?

Please someone help!

Update:

I also forgot to add that when I noticed they'd come out in the wrong size I asked the assistant if I could re-print exactly the same photos in a different size.

However she said that it wasn't her problem they had come out in the wrong size and i'd have to re-pay to get them printed again.

Take them back to the lab and make them redo all of them. 5x7 is NOT normal size for prints so you have the right to make them redo them at their own expense. They made the mistake of printing improperly and you also are deserving of a refund for your expense.

You were charged for the 5x7's... not 4x6's.

If these are from a photo lab of sorts, and you got the wrong size, you need to return to that place and have them produce them in the correct size.

Cutting printed pictures to crop them, can ruin some photos. In many cases, it can improve them. Depending on how you cut, and if there is a border around the entire photo.

If you are going to cut the photo down to size, first use a cutting board, not scissors. You need to make straight cuts at right angles.

Next use the "rule of thirds" whenever possible. Simply put, divide your photo into three parts from left to right, and from top to bottom. Your subject should be on one of the imaginary lines that divide the picture. Trim your photo in such a way as to "shift" the subject. In other words, if you want to move the subject to the right side of the picture, trim the right edge.

An easy way to do this is to take a piece of paper or thin cardboard about 6x7. Cut a 4.1x5.1 window in the center. Lay this on top of your photo and move it around until you like what you see. Trace (gently) around the inside of the cut out. Then trim on those lines.

The other options is to scan them into your computer and print them out on photo grade paper.
