Why did my gas tank needle move so fast?

I have a 99 Mustang GT. Its 65k miles. I filled it up 2 days ago, put 30 miles on it and the needle just past the F mark. I drove to school this morning and went to dunkin donuts which is like 2 miles from my house and my gas meter went all the way to about half a tank, about 1/4 more than the half a tank mark. So it was more towards the half way. Then i drove out of DD, and it went towards halfway between a full tank and a half a tank. Im getting about 14 mpg and i understand that because of the big engine and such, but never has it moved so fast. Could it be possible that im leaking gas somewhere? Why did it do that? I only drove 30 miles!

That is a common problem on many fords. If you park downhill or sit idling for a minute.Sometimes they wont go up to full right away after filling up.I have a 04 F150 and it acted screwy from the start.I kinda learned to decifer it.It is a costly fix because the fuel pump, fuel level sending unit and float are sold as an assembly and the tank has to be dropped,.about 350 parts and 200 labor. Good luck

Leaking gas, probably not as you would be able to smell it after the car has been parked for a while. I would think a broken gas gauge, or fuel gauge, is the problem.

Until feb when eyesight started to fail , I owned s-type jaguar

I am still convinced that during manufacture they crossed the inputs from speedo & gas tank.
