Why make an appointment to the DMV?

I just made an appointment, because it's advised. I don't understand why though, what does the appointment entail to assist me?

In the case of the California DMV which has suffered budget cutbacks, an appointment mainly gets you ahead of the cue, these days you can wait 4 hours to get anything done.

The DMV is always so jam packed. It's good to have an appointment so at the time of your appointment your number will be called and you'll be assisted right away. When you get your number, you go to the appointment line which is ridiculously short! Whereas if you just walked into the DMV, you'd have to wait in the long line to get a number. Then sit down for as long as almost 2 hours waiting for your number to be called!

With an appointment you don't have to stand in a line for hours on end.
