Do you think the "need" for "good" role models in the media is overrated?
Okay as I'm watching an E! News special on the Jonas Brother and some of the people being interviewed are defending how their sexuality morals make them a good role model and their Christian beliefs. Okay personally, this is why I hate the Jonas Brother (other than the fact I'm not 12 anymore), I think the "good morals" trend is overrated in America and most of the time, these "good moral" people behind closed doors do not practice what they preach (especially pop stars that have to maintain a squeaky clean image until they are like 18-21 or something) or if they do; they'll get married early like Kevin Jonas just got married at age 21, Jessica Simpson married at 23, and Josh Duggar who supposedly wasn't allowed to date or even kiss before marriage was 19 about to turn 20 and of course he and his wife recently had a child. And a lot of people with these sheltered lives, aren't well verse in contraception, since it's rarely given as a proper alternative option. A lot of teens who sign purity pledges, etc, do have sex before marriage and sometimes end up pregnant because they may not have known to use contraception or used it properly. And not everyone is a Christian, Jew, or Muslim in this country, and most of the people whose religion doesn't preach against premarital sex or gay lifestyles have lower teen pregnancy rates, higher use of contraceptatives, and still suggest that the participants are consenting adults. I see no problem in a well-educated (sex education) adult or even an older teen to have consentual sex. And most people are neither good or bad, they are somewhere in between. And even the starlets who got famous by selling their own sex tapes still wish to have steady relationships with meaningful sex.
The media is just a very calculated and exaggerated version of basic human nature.
Well even Britney Spears who's in your avatar tried the "purity" thing back in the day, proved later on she wasn't. Reports have since said that her then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake was living with her and supposedly took her virginity at age 18. I'm a 26 year old virgin myself so I'm not saying there's anything wrong with virginity or even marrying at 18 but I'm just saying the normal thing to do is to have sex before you are married, the average person loses it at age 16-18 years of age in America and when I say lose it, I mean traditional intercourse, supposely these days girls as young as 12-14 give guys oral. I'm a virgin but I use vibrators and dildos and that's normal too. And the average person these days gets married around age 25 and sometimes older and of course have children around these ages. But the majority of people who get married before age 25 are either people who believe in purity or get married because they got knocked up. And it's very common in the south...
where most of these "good role models" come from to get married between the ages of 18-22. And sometimes even at ages 15-17. I live in a mid atlantic/southern state and I'm considered a minority because I'm 26, never been married, engaged, nor have I ever been pregnant or have kids. But I'm not completely abnormal up north or in less bible belt regions. NYC has the most singles in the US than most cities.
Vicky, that reminds me.... when there were rumors that Miley was pregnant at 14 (when she was dating Nick Jonas), she claimed she believed in waiting until marriage but after that she goes the route of the pop tart, posing half naked in photos and photos of her kissing her girlfriends and now living with a boyfriend who's at least 20 when she's barely 17. Not only is she contradicting herself but she's giving the impression that it's okay to be a promiscuous lesbian/bisexual girl but not okay for a straight girl to have sex outside of marriage. Not a good message honestly.
But on second thought should we even encourage people to look up to celebrities as role models?

First off, I think parents should be their child's own role model. They whine and moan about how celebrity's should have good lifes just to "positively influence" their children, but that's like trusting a stranger with your child. They say, "Oh, it's because they're always on tv and the radio...they HAVE to be good role models" *makes buzzer noise* Wrong answer! Most celebrities don't ask for the paparazzi. And if you were a good parent, your child will see you more times in their life than they will some fad-based popstar or actor of the now. So cut the crap and be your own role model for your children and stop putting that responsibility on other people...you're the parent, now own up.
Second of all, this is more of a rant. Most people lean towards Christian values because those were the values our nation was built upon. Welcome to America.
Yes, I'm a Christian and I don't plan on having sex until marriage. However, here's my personal rules to sex:
1) If you're going to have sex before marriage, don't whine when your significant other dumps you closely after you've given them the goods. I don't like hearing people (especially women) whine about that sort of nonsense. Had you decided to wait, they would've left because they didn't want to be in it for the long haul.
2) If you're going to have unprotected, pre-marital sex (which many young girls are doing nowadays REGARDLESS of what "religion" they claim to be a part of...or if they have no religion at all), don't complain about getting pregnant and/or getting STDs.
The reason I like the Bible is because it makes sense. God specifically said no pre-marital sex or adultry. If everyone followed this rule, there would be no STDs.
And the media is generally garbage. So I wouldn't look too much into it. Follow Christian values or don't follow Christian values...but don't base that decision off of what some women with fluffed-up hair, a serious face, and good reading skills has to say.

That statement is extremely contradictory! Good role models and media? No. Not likely to happen. Purity rings my a**! There are certain celebs that do it. I applaud them but everyone isn't going to do it. Like you've said, everyone isn't a Christian. Everyone doesn't have the same views or morals.
Touche. You've covered a lot of ground my friend. I agree with you 100%.
Edit: No. We shouldn't encourage anyone to look up to celebs. They are phony especially the ones from Disney. I can't name one that hasn't been involved in a scandal. Racy photos, DUIs, public feuds, drug related issues.
The cookie cutter image is not an image that these kids want to live by. Why would I tell my kids (I don't have any =D) or anybody's kids to look up to them? They have airbrushed faces, battle with eating disorders and do drugs or are addicted to pain killers. They lead a very unhappy life.

No, because there are already too many celebrities getting away with not being good role models. Plus (for the lack of a better example) stars like Miley Cyrus who are supposedly all "Christian-y" are walking around Hollywood half naked and nobody even says anything.

This sounds awful preachy. Since when is 18 too young to marry? I can agree with some of the basic points of this. But, overall, this is nothing more than a rant.
