Kata lovers : What makes a kata your favorite?

What makes a particular kata a "good" kata in your mind? Is it the flow? Is it the pace? Is it the challenging and thought-provoking patterns it has? Or is it just fun to do? I'm curious, because lots of people I see enjoy kata that is clearly too hard for them (they don't understand the bunkai) or they make up new kata. I guess I like the long "challenging" ones, but my favorite kata is probably a basic kata most karate practitioners learn early- heian ni-dan. It forces me to mind my basics. What your favorite kata and why?

And, are there any kata you absolutely hate? I hate sanchin because I see so many people botch it, especially kids (that's a whole other can of worms).

Practicing the proper Bunkai Oyo and discovering other Bunkai possibilities hidden with in the Kata...then applying it to a self defense technique, Kumite situation or against someone who says Kata is useless.

Edit - to add I dont really have any particular kata that I disklike but I do dislike all the crap out there people are passing off as kata today. Flips. spins, dance moves...that stuff is just stupid and has no place in martial arts. I also cannot stand the amount of people that teach students kata and never show them the meaning behind it....it is sad that people do not realize the beauty hidden with kata nor the dedication it takes to master it.

  • I do goju, so I enjoy the really elaborate kata, the ones closed to kung fu, all the soft flowing techniques. So things like seipei, seisan, seiunchin.

I don't like them because they look good, in actuality, I think the hard+fast shotokan kata are what look good, I like these kata because the bunkai are great. The simpler kata and lower ranged kata are mainly striking. People who know karate proficiently are those who know bunkai well. No offence but I find strikes are basics, are you going to learn how to punch even better at about shodan? The room to improve on what should be a strong and polished striking technique is limited, but with bunkai, the combos and grapples are great. Bunkai is what senior look forward to. And as I said, bunkai in beginer kata is limited, still effective, but limited compared to higher ranked kata.

I agree with nwohioguy...the bunkai and the depth of a kata are what draw me... and so everytime I get into a kata it usually becomes my new favourite. Every kata in our style has been a favourite of mine at one point in time or another.

I don't hate any kata. At every colour belt stage I would hate having to do so much shiko dachi or neko..haha...but I never hated the actual kata.

My fave kata is Bassai Dai. I think I always go back to it because it was my first black belt kata.
