As long you have an anti-virus program run,and has update it everyday.It shouldn't be a problem.

Try to get a anti-malware which is different from anti-virus,it give you protect from spyware,malware,etc.

The act of downloading a picture in and of itself will not cause a virus to be put on your system.

However, going to a site that has the picture(s) you want that has malware on it will cause you to be in danger of infection. AVG has a free anti-virus program that works well, but not as well as the paid version. Malwarebyte's free version will not keep you safe from infection but will do a pretty good job of finding existing ones. Your best bet is to get a good paid for AV program, and I find BitDefender 2010 to be very nice. Which one you chose is up to you, what you can afford, and how important your private information and your computer are to you.

The best way to "download" a picture is to right click and "save image as...". Remember, if you can see it on your screen, you've downloaded it already, it is in your temp files.
