Can we still use budget reconciliation to pass the public option?

I don't think any progressive in America is happy with the prospect of delivering 40 million federally-mandated customers into the hands of the same insurance companies that are abusing their power in the status quo, even if there are new consumer protections. So I'm wondering if, once the bill is passed and the exchange established, democrats could use budget reconciliation to create a public option in the exchange. I don't really understand the procedural status of budget reconciliation, though, so it's hard to say. Anyone know?

The democrats don't have to now , they had the necessary votes yesterday and only needed 51 votes today to pass the senate bill and send it to conference where i agree with you that the public option will be re -written back into the bill . The democrats have won the debate and the battle over health care reform .

The public option is the only way to provide competition and drive down costs

    Its off the table...unfortunately

The horrible public option is still not off the table. It is in one bill and not the other that still have to be merged. Your wish of an assisted suicide by government if you should fall ill could still be fulfilled through the public option.

Could be, the current batch of Dems in congress will do anything to control the lower class. They will do anything to get more power over our lives.

The public option is the key to healthcare reform.

Some way, somehow, we will have it.
