I am home schooled and I need some better kind of plan for getting my work done. Any ideas?

I have have been up late at night into early morning 4-5 A.M. and doing all-nighters because I am up to my eyeballs in schoolwork... I have fallen asleep doing math and so-on... I eat lots of sugar and salt and drink tea/coffee for caffeine, but it's wearing me down. My mom gets really mad when I don't do enough though and she won't let me go skiing until it's finished. We don't get even a week for Christmas vacation, we get Christmas day. I really need a new plan for how to manage my time and all that. I have a hard time concentrating for numerous reasons, but that's a whole new can of worms. Please be polite in the comment thread and if you want to know more/ask something either email or IM me. Thanks.

    Hello Sean,

Please know that too much sugar, salt, and caffeine just may be your culprit. It is so important to fuel your body with "living" food, and that does not mean chocolate cake. :)

Eat as many foods as you can in their natural state. And stay away from sugar, that means the Christmas cookies and candy. Well, okay, start after the holidays. But really, you must ease up a bit on that stuff. It really does your body no good. Once you get your body some real food, you'll find it much easier to concentrate.

Next, how many hours of sleep ARE you getting? You should be getting between 8 and 9 hours. The best time to fall asleep is before midnight. And the best time to do your schoolwork is in the morning. If I were you, I'd rearrange my schedule!

My children are not taking a whole week off for Christmas, either. We figure we might as well get it done in the middle of winter than drag it into the summer months!

I have to ask what curriculum you're using. Sounds like you may be doing too much of what I call "busy work". Ask your mom to take a look at WHAT you're doing. Work together and lighten your load a little. School should not be keeping you up all hours of the night.

We are successfully homeschooling without much "homework". Our 2 daughters are in college in the honor's program. Our last two are still at home, getting a full night's sleep. :) You will be able to see more of how we and others homeschool here: http://www.homeschool-rewards.com/yahp

Homeschooling should be enjoyable! Hope we helped!

    Blessings

    Hi Sean,

You really need some rest and relaxation, in short at least two weeks holiday

off to do the things you enjoy. I have been home studying counselling for the past 14 years.

Doing a Diploma. When you are rested your school work will improve.

Study the things your interested in, between studying the compulsory stuff

when I do that I feel happier and it helps me do better work.

Stay off the salt it can increase your blood pressure (Check this with a doctor ).

the key thing is, your mum has to realize your not a machine but a very fatigued

    person doing his best.

Plan 1. Organise a doctors visit perhaps he / she can tell mum what you need to do

    better than I.

    Best Wishes For Your Happiness!

i used to home school. lol, i'd suggest one night, instead of doing an all nighter, get some rest. set the alarm for like 6 or 7, then get up THEN and do your work. you'll find that when you finish, you have more of your day left, and you can either do more work so you dont have to do as much later, or you can go do whatever. most people work best in the morning. have some like milk or tea or coffee in the morning, not the night. you're body's too worn down to function properly at night anyways.

    good luck

Here is a plan. Time manage. It depends on how much homework you have, and what else you have to do. Stop drinking all the caffeine and that stuff. It just makes it worse. Have about 3 hours for school work, then you can do other things. I hope it helps, but you need a little more detail in your question.

Try to switch your sleep schedule. Sounds like you might sleep in and you should be getting up at 6 and starting work at 7 like a normal job. If the school work is intense and your not getting it tell your mom she needs to slow down on the amount (because isn't that why your homeschooled, so it's tailored to you) or get you a tutor. Now on the schedule 45 minutes on each subject with 10 minute breaks and a 30 lunch break, turn off computers, tv, and phones until you get your work done. I hope that helps.

Start with stopping sugar, salt, tea and caffeine. All of these are very powerful drugs and you can do serious damage to your body doing this. Replace these with lots of fresh water, herbal teas and healthy snacks such as protein, eggs, sardines, kippers, lentils or beans, cheese on crackers. For study you need protein and slow release carbs, not drugs.

You very obviously need a time management plan, my daughters used a booklet called, Let's get motivated from the local Uni, but there's stacks of these booklets around that teach you basic time management skills, incorporating a study plan. When I googled www.abebooks.com and typed in time management, The complete Idiots guide and the Dummy's guide (don't take this personal) to time management came up for only one dollar plus postage. That should be your first step.

Secondly, how many hours is there in a day? 24. How many hours sleep do you need? Probably around 8-10. Lets say 10 because that's what my kids (now in their twenties) get. That leaves 14 hours.

You need at least an hour for each meal that includes some preparing and tidying up plus time for snacks, that's another 3 hours. Leaves 11 hours

You need one hour for hygiene/personal care, bathing teeth, dressing etc. Leaves 10 hours.

Then probably one hour for chores etc and an hour leisure to do something which uplifts your spirits. Leaves 8 hours.

Grab yourself a pen and paper and start penning in from 8 or 9 am each hour what to tackle, allowing for breakfast/lunch/dinner and snacks, leisure time etc.

What can't be done in an 8 hour day, simply shouldn't be done. That's crazy, cause adults work 8 hour days and children certainly shouldn't be doing more than that.

If you want more leisure time, then maybe you can get your chores done a little quicker or limit meal times a little. Get yourself one of those guides for time management, I'm sure they'll have stacks of ideas for you.

Obviously my idea is only a guideline. But keep in mind that all of us have the same amount of time each day and all of us have to fit in time to sleep/eat/personal care leisure etc.

If you really can't fit all in the time available to you, maybe you should take a bit longer to complete your studies. Instead of finishing next year, finish in two years time and set the study at a pace that you can keep up with.

Whatever you decide to do, please stop the drugs, it is really bad for you, and please get enough sleep. Children need a minimum of 8-10 sleep each night.

Try not to get too stressed about it all. My children were both home educated, pretty much interest based (like lotsa climbing of trees and days on the beach) and one didn't start to read till she was about 14. So what? She now reads faster than you and I together.

Step One Get enough sleep. Step Two Better nutrition. Step Three Time Management plan/book,

    God bless.

Ps 8 hours study in a day seems like a lot to me, but from your writing it appears as if you are doing double that.

WOW! I feel sorry for you. Homeschooling is about a relaxed atmosphere.

Why is your mom drowning you in school work like you are in public school?

This does not sound like a very good thing for you at all. I don't mean to be rude, but your mom needs to chill out. Homeschooling is about doing things in a relaxed atmosphere at your own flow.

It sounds like she is bringing the public school routines into your home.

I don't know what to tell you. I homeschool my son and we do not do it like that at all. Everyone is different, but most homeschoolers are not going through what you are going through. I feel bad for you, but don't know what to tell you.
