new decade 2010 or 2011?
This might seem like a stupid question, but I was just wondering does the new decade start on jan 1 2010, or 2011. Because, the decades usually start with 0, like 50's etc. But since this decade started with 2001, and its ten years, would it end in 2010, making 2011 the new year. So what do you think, does the new decade start 2010 or 2011?
-Thanks. AND MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR !

Mathematically, the decade starts on the first of January 2011, but there is more social resonance in a year where the numbers actually change, e.g. from '09 to '10.
This is why there was more celebration at the change from 1999 to 2000 than there was at the considerably more pedestrian change from 2000 to 2001, despite the bores' insistence that the millennium didn't really start until 2001.
Let's face it, years are a social construct more than a temporal one. By which I mean, the time of day is defined; it's a specific point in the time it takes for Earth to make a full rotation on its axis. Similarly, December 25 is a specific point in Earth's orbit of the sun. Years are just a count up from a more or less randomly selected year 0, which may or may not have accurately reflected the birth of a major religious figure.

the new decade starts 12:00:01 am Jan 1st 2010
as in years it starts with the first day and in days it starts with the first second.
Merry Christmas to you.
for all ya all wondering if there was a year 0... there was, the 12 months before Jan 1, 1
and 1999 was the end of a Millenium.
1-9 does not make 10
0-9=10

it starts on 2010 because 1999 was the end of the 90s decade, so 10 years later would make 2009 making 2010 the start of a new decade.

I've been wondering the same thing...my guess is that popular culture would say the new decade begins this coming year, but calendar-wise, it would begin on January 1, 2011. Just like the actual new millennium began in 2001, not 2000, because there was no year 0.

2011.
Think about it.
Year 1- 10 is ten years, so that's the first decade. You think they counted a year 0?
- Anonymous1 decade ago
It would start in 2011 unless there was a year 0 way back when.

I think a decade should be 0-9. So, it will be for me. Everyone else can think what they want.
