How long should I give milk to my kitten?

It's the kitten formula from the pet store. Not cow milk! ;)

Update:

She is 2 months old now and we have been giving her cat milk formula once in a while, but seems like some people think that it is bad for them. At what age do you stop feeding them milk. She east dry food most of the time and a little bit of milk every few days, because she tries to nurse on my neck and don't know how to stop her.

Update 2:

I doubt my vet is open at 8 pm on Christmas eve. And I am just having fun with yahoo answers, isn't that what it's for?

Kitten formula is just fine.... MILK is a problem. So which are you giving her, kitten formula from the petfood store, or milk from the grocery store? At 2 months formula is still fine, cow's milk is a bad idea at any age.

When she tries to suck on your neck, a firm "no" followed by putting her down and refusing to interact with her for several minutes will teach her that she doesn't want to do that.

While milk might seem like a natural choice for your cat, the truth is that cow’s milk offers no nutritional value for cats, and it can cause digestive problems in many. The reason is that most cats develop intolerance to lactose shortly after they are weaned. This means that they are unable to digest the sugars that occur naturally in milk. This causes problems that include diarrhea and other unpleasant digestive problems.

Kittens, unlike full grown cats, DO need milk, but the milk they need is their mother’s. The mother’s milk is full of all the fat, protein and antibodies that a kitten needs to grow and survive. Until a kitten is weaned, approximately four weeks after birth, a kitten should have only milk. NEVER give a kitten cow’s milk. Obviously, the ideal milk is that from the kitten’s mother. If this is not possible due the kitten, you will need to feed a substitute that should be available at your local pet store. The kitten will need to be fed this milk substitute several times a day.

At two months old, it should be weaned from the formula. Also "Whiskas Cat Milk", such as you see in the grocery and pet shops IS not formula, it's cows milk marketed for cats.

SOME cats have a lactose intolerance, just like people do, but not ALL CATS!!!

And there are ways of dealing with this, too!

There is "Lactose-FREE" milk available that you can give a cat, just as you would a person.

Then there is the case with CHEESES. AGED cheeses are FINE for cats, because the aging process changes the lactose and there is no problem with it. Cheeses that are NOT aged (i.e. mozzarella) still have the lactose problem. Oh, and cats LOVE cheese! Just try a bit of cheddar cheese!

So, it is NOT TRUE for ALL cats.
