Is december 24th or 25th Jesus' birthday?

My boyfriend is Finnish and everyone there celebrates it the 24th

I'm American and of course we always celebrate it the 25th :/

We're so confused right now....

Why is christmas celebrated on different days in our two countries?

Update:

We weren't arguing over what day his birthday was...

we were arguing over what day christmas is celebrated.

Christmas is celebrated on the date of a tradition pagan holiday worshiping the winter Solstice. This was done by the catholic church to detract from the festivities and convince them to celebrate a christian holiday. In truth, Jesus was likely born in august or so. They've done more research into it, I'm not quite sure of the period that they've narrowed it down to. If the shepherds were out with flocks and the events occurring as they are said to have in the bible, it would not have been anywhere near the middle of winter.

Because of this variation, different Church's and countries celebrate on different days. Russian orthodox celebrate on January 7th, for example, becuase they used a different calander than us.

Other churchs, do all their celebrating on what we would consider to be 'christmas eve' so that they can spend actual christmas reflecting on the faith side of the holiday. This is big in Nordic tradition and my very norwegion side of the family observes this, even though we don't.

Hope that helps. Merry Christmas (whenever that is).

    Cheers.

Actually christmas is celebrating the sun god and then the christians turned it into christmas and the greeks messed up the calender so everybody is already dead according to 2012 and jesus was never born on christmas i know this because my grandpa told me and he is a retired professor at a very important university and he has years of knowledge but really to the world today its the 25 because ''everybody'' says Jesus was born christmas day and before you ask here it would be way easier to just look it up in google.

most likely neither day is his birthday -- based on history it would be in the Spring-- but the "official" day of celebration is the 25th in the USA. My bf is Danish and they celebrate on the 24th.

In England the celebrations go on til Twelfth Night, January 4th or 5th. All countries are a little different.

Two celebrations are better than one, right?

    no

Dec 25 is the day the Catholic church chose to celebrate the birth of Jesus with a high holy mass

Jesus wouldn't have celebrated his own birthday, either, it was not part of the Jewish tradition

many cultures have their own 'winter' holidays, some of them have been incorporated into Christianity, and some still stand alone

Remember the shepherds in the Nativity story? They wouldn't have been out in winter. So, Jesus couldn't have been born in winter-- unless, of course, the Bible has it wrong.

We don't know when Jesus was born.

(Also: Susy, what you were talking about was the worship of Sol Invictus ("Unconquered Sun"), who was worshiped on the date of the winter solstice, Dec. 25, and the gift giving holiday, Saturnalia. Just clearing that up for you and anyone else who cares.)
