I think a few people mis understood the question...I have cancer and cannot be around anyone that even has a little cold. Call the person that you want to see & ask them, bc you dont want to risk it.

Source(s): I commend you for thinking about this bc lots of people dont even think about getting a cancer patient sick by a little cold or runny nose.

It's a good question, and some of the other answerers have missed its point. You should be careful around a cancer patient because you might transfer your infection to them. There is of course no risk that you will "catch cancer" from the patient, but actually many cancer patients die of what we call "opportunistic infections" meaning infections that normally would not be lethal. The side effects of many chemotherapy drugs include destroying much of the bone marrow and the patient can be very anemic or have a low white count, similar to how someone with AIDS does. So the cancer patient often has to worry about catching common diseases that might kill them. As another answerer said, if the patient has a good white count (most patients know this number) he/she is probably safe from your cold.

That's B.S. about cancer patients, you cannot catch cancer from cancer patients and I don't know where this person got this info from but, they'd better do a little more reading.

A runny nose or cold has nothing to do with cancer or catching cancer.

Oh dear... Do you know what cancer is?? It is the growth of abnormal cells? How can that be possibly spread from person to person??

Admitidly there are some viruses like HPV and EBV which have been closely linked with cancer BUT you do not catch these by being around someone with it. HPV.

Please educated yourself with all the simple stuff....

You can only be around people with cancer that have good blood counts. Ask them if they're counts are high or low, if they're low stay away.

    Source(s): I have cancer.
