No anti Freeze in Car!?
Before I explain, please dispense with the "you should have checked" etc... It's done now, cant go back.
Anyway, Landrover Freelander 1.8gs, 2001.
Wife tried to start, but it was frozen, pipes not bulging but frozen none the less. I thawed it out and tried to start, its turning over, and sounds like its just about to start but then wont.
Dont think there is anything leaking but then again ground is wet anyway, so there could be.
What should I be checking to establish whats wrong or does my description suggest what it might be?

p.s The head gaskets were done two months ago, they obviously just used water when filing the system, yes, I should have checked anyway, but as I say, its done now.

Hi Lee, sorry to hear your predicament, contrary to opinion the so called freeze plugs are not designed to fallout during freezing conditions, they are actually galley plugs used in the manufacure of engines when cast, It is indeed hard to tell if your problem is related to engine damage or just cold temp. most engines with leaky cooling systems will start and run momentarily, you need to warm the engine to thaw the coolant and see if it goes into your crankcase or oilpan, check the dipstick for elevated level. If it should start after thaw, check oil for color changes, milky or creamy colors indicate coolant contamination, implies cracks in head or block. Make sure your battery is amply charged and use a starting fluid to aid in startup to complete your diagnostic. Hope this helps you...good luck

The problem is not going to be answered by this forum very well. There are so many possibilities that it is not possible to do anything but guess- and a no-start condition probably means that a sensor got damaged with the pressure of the ice.
What is more likely is that you will experience massive problems over the next few weeks after you get the thing to start. There are freeze plugs in the block and head (expansion plugs) that pop out when the pressure gets too high from ice, and even if it does not seem to leak now it might well do so over the first few engine warm-ups. The recently done head gasket may be damaged, there can be "spider cracks" in the metal parts from the pressure, and other parts that are in contact with the coolant could also show damage over the coming weeks.
What I would recommend is that you contact the shop that performed the head gasket service and get pushy- they should have put the proper mix of anti-freeze in the engine prior to ever giving you back the car. It is the fault of the mechanic, unless they were sold improper coolant from the supplier. This still means that the repair is in their hands, not your responsibility for not checking.

there is a device called a freeze plug on your engine block. That's supposed to pop off before any serious damage is done to your engine block. That's the theory, anyway. It usually doesn't stop the engine block from getting cracked. Maybe you got some water on the electrical stuff under the hood, preventing it from starting. That would be the best case scenario. Try using a hair dryer to warm up the engine a little and dry out any wet spots... good luck!

Did you thaw it out at the water pump. It sounds like it's sluggish because of slush in the system.

the responsible party/parties would be those whom ***'embled it without proper materials;like COOLANT !!!
speak to them about it first. then if agreed get it in writing before any thing is done.
if not then other arrangements with lawyers or small claims must be made.

are you getting fuel? is the water back to a liquid state or slushy? needs to be liquid. fuel could be frozen also. spray brake kleen/card kleen/ starting fluid, in the carb/intake hose, and see if it tries to fire. then you know if its fuel or not. pull the dip stick out and check your oil. now is there oil on it or alot of milky looking stuff on the stick. if milky just stop. water in the oil, espcially if its way over the full mark. good luck.
