What coughing problem could this be? Is it asthmatic bronchitis again or something else?

I have this horrible hoarse cough which hurts my chest. Every time I cough, I start letting out a series of coughs which make me lightheaded. I also taste blood which each cough. Does anyone know what this is?

Update:

I just got over a cold, so I know it's not that. I haven't seen any blood, I just taste it.

Update 2:

I guess it might help to add that this is NOT allergy related.

I'm surprised to see the term "asthmatic bronchitis" used here. I'm assuming a doctor used that term to explain your condition. That is an old term that used to describe a severe bronchitis in which the airways were so swollen you could hear audible wheezing. It went out of use because it is misleading.and could lead to the wrong treatment protocol.

The term asthma is used to describe bronchial muscle constriction as a reaction to an extrinsic allergen or emotion factor. This is treated with bronchodilators that relax those muscles. Asthma also has bronchial swelling and thick mucous production. Whereas a severe bronchitis does not have the muscle constriction associated with it. This is treated aggressively with steroids and possibly antibiotics and hydration but not necessarily with bronchodilators.

You sound as if you have a severe laryngitis and trachitis which would produce the the exact symptoms you describe. The excessive coughing causes an engorgement of the blood vessels in your respiratory tract and can sometimes cause these little blood vessels to burst. In more severe forms of bronchitis there is so much damage to the bronchial walls that even larger vessels can burst.

But blood is always a sign you need help right away in an ER preferably.

The lightheadedness is from what's called a Valsava maneuver. This is like holding your breath till you turn purple. Blood is prevented from draining from your brain because of the high pressures generated in your chest. If blood can't drain then the circulation is diminished causing lightheadedness or even passing out.. This is commonly known as "cough syncope".

Let me just reiterate that you need treatment from a doctor before this gets any worse.

    Hope this answers your question.

God bless and help you through this.

It is a cough and you need to be taking some over the counter cough medication regularly. And, with any harsh coughing, it is possible to break small capillaries in the airways. These seal themselves back up quickly and heal when the coughing eases. Running a humidifier in the bedroom where you sleep will also help; increasing your daily water intake and taking some tylenol or motrin regularly for the pain in your chest from the coughing. Common sense should tell you that if you do all of the above and you continue to get worse and worse, it would be time to see your doctor. This could be a cold, it could be bronchitis, it could be asthmatic bronchitis. They are all treated the same except sometimes, an inhaler may be needed.
