Can I get a bicycle insured?
My wife got me a new 26 inch mountain bike for Christmas. I had a similar bike that got stolen years ago off the rack on a bus. This time I want to be insured. Is this possible and if it is, how much should I expect to pay.

lock it even on the bus
sounds like a bike that isn;t all that expensive
keep it inside
basic stuff
insurance probably not worth it
homeowners may cover it anyway
the dollar store usually has a pretty good cable lock
light, small, deters the 'thief of opportunity'
a $40 lock isn;t going to be 40 times better

If it is a very expensive bike you can get a special "rider" on your insurance. The cost of the rider will depend on the value of the bike. If it is a less expensive bike it maybe covered under your normal home owners insurance. You will have to ask the insurance folks how much they will cover for a stolen bike, without an additional rider.
If you don't own a home you can still get renter's insurance that will do about the same thing (covers your stuff, but not the structure), which you should have anyway if you don't have it.

You can get insured for almost anything. But policies vary on whether and how much you will pay. Generally the best place to consider is on your homeowners' or renters' insurance. More important, consider the deductible (a $500 or $1000 deductible might not make a claim worthwhile unless it's a very expensive bike). Furthermore, a claim may put rates up for subsequent years.
I used to have replacement cost coverage under a premium form of house insurance but we eventually dropped the firm as too expensive. Covering our 9 bikes with the new firm would have cost over $500/yr for a special rider policy. I decided to just accept the risks and so far in 5 years we haven't lost a bike (I'm $2500 ahead right now, so I think I won).
Anyway ... discuss with your insurance broker.

If you have home owners or renters insurance the bicycle is covered. If you bring it inside the house or garage the chances of it being stolen are greatly reduced.
If you have a high end bicycle, call your agent and notify them. I have 5 bicycles 4 of which are expensive road bikes. I had to give him a list of the serial numbers and for good measure I provided pictures of each. They are covered for full replacement cost. No extra charge on my premium as I have replacement cost on my furnishings.

Where I live, most mountain bikes are a little to cheap t be insured (premium too expensive)
Perhaps you can buy non-numeric cable lock (not easily cut with a cutter) for better security
