What does "ni Hao" in Chinese really mean?
I say it means "you how", that is "how are you" and it is also the way to say Hello. This is a source of discussion.

its used to mean how. if you were to translate it word by word, ni means you and hao means good. so technically its saying 'you good' to people. but everyone uses it for hello... and ni and hao together means ni hao.
ni hao ma? means how are you. technically it would be you good? the ma makes it a question, so its asking someone how they are

In Chinese, it actually does mean Hello or Hi.
In English, if you really translate it literary it means "you good"
So I think that is how your mixing it up, in Chinese its a greeting, but a direct translation it means "you good"
And to say how are you, you just add a ma to ni hao, since ma is a question particle, which makes ni hao a question instead of a greeting.

Initially, no you need not single out the Chinese, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you had better as a matter a fact go through with it once it has been chosen
