Why should people remain good when unobserved and unpoliced by God?

"Perhaps," Richard Dawkins speculates, "I... am a Pollyanna to believe that people would remain good when unobserved and unpoliced by God."

I am under most circumstances the last person on earth to think Richard Dawkins a Pollyanna, but in this case I defer to his description. Why should people remain good when unobserved and unpoliced by God? Do people remain good when unpoliced by the police?

If you believe that they do, you must explain the existence of criminal law, and if you believe that they do not, then you must explain why moral enforcements is not needed at the place where law enforcement ends.

It is human nature of a person to be good, do good, etc. We see it everywhere we go. Children always trying to do something good to get recognition from their parents; Adults trying to do good to get recognition from their peers. It is part of our morals to just be 'good.'

I disagree that all people are naturally bad. This is not always the case. Of course there's going to be the few bad eggs that throw off the count, but does that mean the entire human population is bad? We only see the bad things on the news because that is what news industries have become addicted to in their broadcasts.

Watching the news is saddening because it only showcases the cruelty and wickedness of certain humans. Children and adults watching the news only get a feel for the bad in this world because the good acts aren't brought into the spotlight.

So as it may seem that there is far much more bad in this society, look around you and see that there is far more good. Take this holiday season for instance. How many people donated to charity? That is part of their morals to contribute to the less fortunate. The little acts of kindness in this world generally get left unnoticed by the masses, but those that are involved and feel their warmth will never forget.

Moral enforcement can and will take you where law enforcement ends. People stick to their morals most of the time, and even when they steer off track for a short period of time, these people always come back to the trail of life in which they live according to their morals.

It's just a bunch of Atheist with blinders on who think that without God the world would be a utopia. When we can see the deprivation of mankind with the threat of God and the police and it's only going to get worse as more people begin to feel that there is no God and that the only actions that matter are the ones that will benefit themselves.

Why should people remain good? What is good in the eyes of people?

It's a valid question, whether we could trust christians to behave without them sweating an imaginary god looking over their shoulder. Yet this area abounds with ex-christians, and they seem to have carried morals and ethics with them when they shed mythology. I remind you also that christians are represented in the prison populations out of all proportion to their percentage of the general population, so easy blanket forgiveness for all sins is apparently not the basis for deeply held and carefully observed morality.

You should use your own moral compass and guilty conscience to know right from wrong. Unless you a completely brainwashed individual who is sole product of their environment with no exposure to mainstream education and morals then is really no excuse to be bad. But people are, they enjoy it and that's why the world is the way it is. I wouldn't say God is policing anyone right now, where is he?? Having a moral compass inside us is no proof of the existance of God. People need policing by law enforcement to protect the human race from destroying each other.

There is no one good but God..Mankind is born evil, unholy, sinful, wicked and destined to a lake of fire. This is why Almighty God sent forth His only begotten Son, Jesus the Christ, to be the sacrifice lamb. Jesus was not born of sinful man but by the Holy Spirit of God and it is through the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, that mankind, by calling upon the NAME of JESUS, can receive by faith, total cleansing, redemption, sanctification, justification, power, authority, divine relationship and fellowship back with God the Father, the Creator of all living! Those who die without receiving Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit, will die in their sins and be forever separated from GOD and will not walk the streets of glory. Religions have tried to reach God but in their vain attempts, do fail and are used of Satan to deceive mankind into hell.

People are already unobserved and unpoliced by a god. Nothing would change.

I doubt that there are that many people in the world, including most Christians that are really that consider themselves to be 'good' because they are worried that their god is watching...

Especially the ones that believe all they have to do is appologize and confess...

Because being good without observation creates a more stable society. We, as humans, may have "evolved" to be good for this reason.

Being good is generally what good people like to do. There are also bad people of course, but none of this has anything to do with the existence of gods.

Human society and human laws are real, whereas gods are unreal.

    No one is good.

    Romans 3:10-12

God is omniscient and omnipresent, all things are observed by God. Everyone will answer for every thought or deed they have committed.
