Home made food, for it to be balanced and complete is not so simple as 1-2-3.. its not rocket science either, but its a lil more complicated than just finding a recipie.

If you insist on cooking at home, you need to do a lil research on dog nutrition.. there are many raw feeding, BARF, and home cooking groups on yahoo to begin research on how to properly balance a diet for your dog.

Chicken, rice and carrots is not a balanced diet for a dog, expecially not a growing puppy. It may be ok as a meal for a nite or two if you are short on dog food, or as a bland diet when your dog has an upset stomache.. but its not a good diet for long term. Dogs get very little, if any nutrition from grains and veggies.. so the carrots and rice are nothing more than filler... so basically your dog is only getting nutrition from chicken. This alone is not providing enough nutrients, fats, and calcium.. dogs in the wild eat bones, organs, fat and skin to get some of these nutrients... and since your dog is filling up on rice and carrots, he's probably not getting enough protien in his diet either.

You can either get more when you buy the food-2 bags instead of one-or you can look up RAW diet. It basically consists of chicken and vegetables but it can be quite expensive. If you do decide to switch to a homemade diet do it slowly so it doesn't disturb her system-you should do that when you switch food anytime. Start by feeding 75% old/25% new for a few days then gradually move on until she is 100% on the new.

    Here is an easy one:

    Puppy Pretzels

    1 teaspoon brown sugar

    2 teaspoons active dry yeast

    2/3 cup water

    3/4 cup whole wheat flour

3 tablespoons soy flour, low fat

    1/4 cup nonfat dry milk

    1 tablespoon dried liver powder

    1 tablespoon bone meal flour

    3/4 teaspoon salt

1 egg -- beaten (1/2 in recipe, 1/2 in glaze)

    2 tablespoons cooking oil

    3 tablespoons wheat germ

Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water.

Combine dry ingredients. Add half of the beaten egg, oil and yeast water

    mixture. Mix well.

Knead on a well floured board until dough is firm. Place in oiled bowl,

cover and let rise until double in bulk.

Shape into pretzels and place on greased cookie sheet. Bake in

preheated 375 degree oven for 15 minutes. Remove and brush with

beaten egg and sprinkle with wheat germ. Return to oven and bake at

300 degrees for about 15 minutes until nicely browned and quite firm.

Note: You may omit liver powder and bone meal flour if you have

    difficulty locating them.

Why must you cook for the dog? Just start the dog on a very good quality dog kibble abscent of fillers and crap and stick to it for the life of the dog.

Sure...one that's complete & balanced, not just some ignorant humans vague notion of correct.

    Ready?

Go to store...pick up a bag of dry adult feed...take it HOME to feed.
