HELP! foreign exchange! new high school!?

I go to private school in Ireland and I want to do transition year in America. I would like to go and live with a family in America but I don't want to do a foreign exchange. Would I be able to go to public school or would I have to go to private school seeing as I'm not an American citizen? And is there any way I would be able to go to school there? If so how? Visas? I have also heard that high school is very cliquey, and how is it cliquey? Can anyone suggest any foreign exchange programs??

First, ignore the other answers they are SO wrong.

You cannot just come to the U.S. and jump into high school. If you are under 18, you need a parent or guardian (a host family qualifies) OR you need to be an emancipated minor.

If you have friends or relatives here, you might consider the F1 visa method, if they are willing to be responsible for you. You also need a school that will accept an F1 visa student -- not all will. Generally those around military bases and large universities do.

The most common method is to go through an exchange program such as AFS or YFU. On those, you come on a J1 visa and the program handles finding the school, host family, etc. And, after you pay the program fees, there is no proof of finances. You are generally placed in a public school.

However, if you will have graduated secondary school, I'd suggest that you NOT go to an American high school but go to a college or university instead.

Well you can't just come over with out doing an exchange program unless you are a college student. Ask your school counselor if you have one about programs for foreign exchange, or there are many different programs you can look into online. You would go to a public school most likely, but it depends on the location of your host family and what schools participate in the program.

As far as cliquey... some schools are worse than others, but it shouldn't be one of your main concerns. Everyone hangs out with their own group of friends, it's not as bad as you think. But don't worry about that at all because it won't be a problem.

you can go to a public or a private high school, it doesn't matter. also, foreign exchange doesn't necessarily mean that you have to find someone to stay at your home - you really just find a place for yourself in the US to live and study.

you should contact the US embassy where you live and ask them. they will have plenty of info on programs, visas, etc.
