Sorting through jewelry to find the good stuff?

I've inherited several boxes of jewelry. I know most of it is costume, but how do I find out if some pieces are real gold or silver? Would a jeweler be willing to help sort through it? Are there specific types of things I should be looking for?

    a jeweler should be able to do it for free if not then go to another or ask for someone else.

    or you can hold them up at gunpoi8nt till they help you....anyway's fine
