Could my son be colorblind?

I'm the mom and not colorblind. Dad is colorblind. Could or son be colorblind? I heard that it comes from mom only, but he is almost three and absolutely will not learn his colors. He just seems confused when I try to work with him.

Update:

Thanks everyone.

If there is no GENETIC colorblindness in your family, he probably isn't GENETICALLY colorblind, but, if you are a carrier, there is a 50% chance that he could be. There are a lot of reasons for colorblindness besides the genetics behind it, It would be best tot ake your son to be tested.

Colorblindness is a sex-linked trait found on the X-chromosome. Men only have one X, so if they have a colorblindness gene on that one, they're colorblind. Women have two X's, so they have two chances. They're only colorblind if both X's have a colorblind gene. So, even though you're not colorblind, it's possible that you carry the gene for it, and could have passed it on to your son.

If you're worried, you could take him to an eye doctor to have him tested.

well there are multiple forms of colorblindness.

Let me give a brief explanation

Two types of recievers in the eye which are rods and cones (rods-black and white) cones( colors)

There are three types of cones

    red and green

    blue and yellow

    another i cant remeber

normally colorblindness is when u are missing one type of cone so you cannot see some colors. If it is complete colorblindess it is genetic. I do not know if it is a dominant trait. if it is cause one parent has it your child will have a 50% chance. If it is reccesive both parents must be carriers for it. If it reccesive and you have the gene it is probably 25%. If it reccesive and you do not have the gene it is 0% chance.

Chances r very less, unless ur father was also colorblind.

If ur father was not colorblind, then no need to worry. Ur son is perfectly OK.

As the other answers stated, it's x-linked... He got his x gene from you.

Is your dad colorblind? If he was then one if your X chromosomes is recessive for color vision. If your dad wasn't colorblind that it's unlikely that your son is.

Since it's a son (XY) it wouldn't matter what your husband has since he contributed the Y chromosome, it's important for your XX if either of them contain a colourblind gene. You'll have to track back to your parents or even further down your ancestry line to be able to determine whether you have a chance of having a colour blind trait or not. This is best seen if you have a colour blind uncle, father, brother etc. (they're more frequent in boys). But the best bet is to go see a doctor if you're worried.

If only the mother is supposed to pass the trait, then probably not, but perhaps you have a carrier trait or maybe your facts are wrong. I'd say see a pro. doctor.

he could be, but its worth knowing that almost all men/boys have problems with colours, they have problems telling the difference between blue and green and my boyfriend has a problem with red, if there is a moving red object it turns grey

    :S

I would suggest getting him a test of some sort, contact your gp.
