Why does my hamster only like to chew on his cage?

I've tried everything! chew toys, sticks, tp rolls. he doesn't like any of it! All he does is chew on the cage, and it keeps me awake all night because its so loud. I know hamsters chew to keep there teeth from growing, and it is vital to chew, but is there ANYTHING else I can try?

Update:

I gave him carrots before, he loved them. the only thing is I heard if you feed them to the hamster to much, they can get the runs, if you know what I mean.

Hmm. The main thing I can tell you is to try harder things for him to chew on since he seems to always go for the bars. Maybe try the "Snack Shacks" which are made out of pressed greens and what not. It's very hard and crunchy.

Your hamster is obviuously an avid chewer of cage bars with the help of what your asserting and the terrific element to do could be to alter the cage to some thing which does no longer have bars and, that's what you will ought to do in case you may not end hamster from chewing... chewing of the bars can harm the teeth besides because of the fact the remainder of the mouth. If hamster's mouth is therapeutic then a vet circulate to isn't required I shouldn't ask your self besides the reality that it incredibly is under no circumstances going to get greater perfect if hamster contains on with cage bar chewing - the lemon thought i does no longer circulate with. If hamster has a particular place she chews at, attempt sticking some thing risk-free and chewable in the time of the bars - in case you feed those horrid sticky hamster sticks... attempt and positioned one in each of those in her way? Or, a wood peg or comparable... making confident each thing is hamster risk-free. Does hamster have a advantageous good based wheel and does she use it? Do you convey hamster out of her cage for lots playtime? She needs some thing, subsequently all the chewing of the cage bars? some hamsters should not be swayed and could save on chewing the bars no remember what we do yet I do have faith this should be rectified... changing the cage to a tumbler or plastic style cage or tank could be an excellent thought. terrific of success!

well, you can get the flavored chew toys- they wood chew sticks at the pet store. They have flavored one. That's what we did with ours and it worked. You are right about the carrots. You can only give a hamster veggies once or twice a week. So, those don't work. I would try the flavored chew sticks if you haven't already. Your other option would b to get a cage w/o bars on it, but their teeth will still grow too much and they need to be worn down.

  • My hamster does that, its so annoying, he does it because he wants to escape I think its bad to hold a hamster before you go to bed because that's when they want to stay out. As you said they also do it to cut down there teeth! I recommend buying a new cage one like a tank. But apparently they are heavy! Maybe you should move around the toys and tunnels so the hamster can not climb on top of them.

umm try rubbing some veg on the chew toys so that they taste and smell nice and he/she might chew it!

also you could try some wooden toys and he might naw on that.

maybe at night you could move the cage (thats what i do) to another room or if none of that works you could try buying a new cage. If you are thinking of buying i would by rotastak, it is a very good hamster cage and has good ventelation although they are plastic cages!

hope i helped and god luck with your hamster!

He may be chewing his cage for FREEDOM! If his "cage" is glass, won't it be quieter? (He really won't be able to get a "bite" on the smooth glass surface.)
