Why should it matter that they're family?

I personally believe if you know someone is disrespectful and takes advantage of the people around them, it shouldn't matter if they are family or not whether you treat them more kindly than a stranger. To me, basing respect or better behavior on blood ties is a matter of pride, and I don't believe in it as an excuse or loophole . I don't mean to sound heartless, it's just that I've grown to find the importance of blood family hard to wrap my mind around and sort of unfathomable because I like to focus on the individual rather than their association.

So why should it matter to me that someone is my blood family? Why is it more important that I cherish a jerk of an uncle versus a much closer non-blood related friend? If someone dies, related or not, I know you can't replace them, and it shouldn't matter karma wise who I treat better, worse, or equally. Given the right people, anyone can feel like "family" to me.

So why is blood tied family so important?

In my experience, people who believe "blood is thicker that water" use it as measure expectations of loyalty, duty to them. I've been held beholdent by family....but get nothing but judgement, condemnation and critism in return. At the moment....certain family members are pushing their values onto my own kids....which they are getting tired off as well. If being blood gives you that right...i'd much rather class my friends as family...who would drop everything to be my side when I need help. Not hovering over me in judgement! (Sorry if it's too deep....Christmas.....always good for stirring things up) ;)

I think it has to do with the idea of "Community".

I am dealing with a problem with my mother. I am trying to figure things out. She's really nothing more than the woman who gave birth to me. But others deem me ungrateful when I dismiss her even though she is a hateful woman with wicked habits and a tormented soul.
