iTunes should work on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. What version of Windows are you using?
Windows XP came out in 2002.
It may be that you have Windows XP but you have not installed any of the service packs.
When an operating system like Windows gets released, Microsoft releases service packs throughout it's lifetime.
A service pack is like a set of upgrades.
For Windows XP there were 3 sets of service packs. Service Pack 1, Service Pack 2 and Service Pack 3.
iTunes needs at least Service Pack 2 to be installed before you can install it onto your computer.
You can find out what Service Pack you have by right-clicking on My Computer and select Properties.
Where is says "Windows XP" it should have "SP1, SP2 or SP3" after it. If it doesn't have any of these it means you do not have any of the Service Packs installed.
I really recommend that you install the latest Service Pack (SP3) onto your computer before you install iTunes.
You can download the Windows XP Service Pack 3 from this link:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
You need to install all of the updates, including the Service Pack before you can install iTunes. It may take a couple of hours to do this if you have never done it before.
Hope this helps.

There are plenty of good iTunes alternatives that you can use like:
~Songbird
~doubleTwist
~CopyTrans
~MediaMonkey
That's all I can think of right now.
