Why are so many medical doctors so uneducated about how important a healthy lifestyle is?

I literally changed my views 180 degrees, almost, in the last few years. I never really thought about food and just took things like Lipitor to "stay healthy". Then I met this diet / fitness trainer who helped me get in great shape and i've never felt better before and I have a good diet and don't take any medication anymore at all.

but so many doctors never advise things like that. They just put you on antibiotics for a simple cold, for example and then don't even advise to take probiotics after that. So they kill your intestinal bacteria including the good ones and don't care about rebuilding them.

it's so ignorant.

Your body is made out of what you eat you know.

Hey Austrian, In the US they prescribe antibiotics to 20 million people a year for viral infections When they know it does nothing for viral infections. NU TING!!! How are we suppose to trust someone like this. We have no voice! and it ticks me off to no end when they try to cover up things here and debunk everything we say like they're gods and then congratulate one another, like a bunch of blood sucking bats.

You do make some good points. At the same time though its also true that unless people are pretty uneducated or not up to date with things then most people do know about the importance of healthy diet and exercise and there has to be some personal responsibility also.

That said, saying though that theres not a single doctor on the planet that doesnt inform their patients of a healthy diet is a bit farfetched and really unrealistic. In my experience, when i used to go to the doctors going back approx 3 years ago there were many doctors that never mentioned anything at all regarding dietary factors/importance.There are some who do too of course.

People should take personal initiative and not wait for a doctor to tell them they need to eat healthy or lose weight but at the same time, ideally, doctors being in the health industry should make a good impression and also loose weight ie:there are a few fat doctors around:)

Its not look good for an overweight doctor to be telling their patients about the importance of losing weight

Not dairy as such but calcium is, and it's hard to comsume enough calcium without dairy. Three servings per day sounds perect and is deffinately an important part of being healthy. Don't listen to anyone who tells you it's fattening, because it's so beneficial and I promise you it would do your body no favours to cut it down. Keep up the good work. X

Anti biotics aren't for colds/viruses. ONLY bacterial infections. Many wrongly Rx'd these meds to get patients off their backs. simple No and explanation is fine. Why would anyone take it without a culture anyway? Alternatives /homeopathy meds aren't regulated or in therapeutic doses, many have metals, lead, other chemicals in them could be harmful. Many can delay proper diagnosis.

It's true nutrition and exercise are the best for a healthy lifestyle.

So, if everyone is, no money for the docs or insurance companies.

Many people are underdoses anyway, so the original condition gets worse, they blame the patient for their new ineptness. ALL fraudulent, greed and to their amusement for some cruel reason.

Doctors usually only have time to treat illnesses once they arise. There is no doctor on the planet who will not inform their patients of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle; they simply do not have the time to work with you the way your diet/fitness trainer could. When does personal responsibility for health become a factor in your thinking? It's plain common sense that you should take care of yourself. I guess you need to be coddled every step of the way in maintaining your own health. What's next? Are you gonna ask why doctors don't show up every morning and cook you a healthy breakfast?

Every single doctor I have ever been too has told me that it's good that I don't smoke, don't drink, don't do drugs, and rarely take any sort of over the counter medication.

They also have all encouraged me to eat less, and exercise more.

I don't know what doctors you went to, but they were obvisously not very good at their jobs.

Very few doctors, if any would prescribe antibiotics for a cold. There is little evidence for the effectiveness of probiotics, the bacterial balancing act is a little more complicated than that.

I'm glad you feel better after getting fit - it would be wonderful if we could all manage that. But it won't alone stop you from getting all sorts of illnesses and disease like cancer etc. It won't stop you from getting infections either.

Did anyone warn you of the side effects and risks of Liptor?

If you think that doctors are uneducated about healthy lifestyle, then you are wrong. It is medical science that studies this and makes such discoveries in the first place. My GP always asks me about my diet and lifestyle.

Because they are trained to dish out drugs, not to look after the people's health..... If everyone took care of their health then 'they' would eventually go out of business... OMG that would effect so many people, the pharmacist, the hospitals, etc...etc... Don't forget the medical Industry is just a business that has established and gained the trust of many people... Doctor's are not god, they are just people who have studied medicine and know their stuff.... They are trained to treat the symptoms, but not the cause...!

They are trained and paid to treat symptoms and prescribe drugs, not provide preventive advice. To be fair, some doctors, going against the grain, do offer helpful nutritional suggestions, but they are the exception. As it is, if the doctors did provide everybody with such advice, many of them would have to line up for unemployment insurance, because there would be fewer ill people. Medical students recieve only the minimal in nutritional education, conventional medicine is not interested in addressing the root causes of illness. Unfortunately this is the outcome when the health of many takes a backseat to the profits of a few.

in the US people want a quick fix for any problem.

instant coffee, instant tea, instant "on" for all tech gadgets, etc. then came television commercials inventing diseases and promising a quick fix. if the docs gave advice to get healthy instead of writing a prescription, patients would move on to another doctor.
