Do you think a singer must write their own songs to be considered a legend?

I do. Look at Elvis, Aretha Franklin and Frank Sinatra. They wrote none of heir own songs, whilst other great artists, like Michael Jackson and The Beatles did. IMO that makes them greater artists. Not only did they perform art, but they also created art.

Update:

Mischa - Elvis wrote NONE, as I said.

yes, you should. its the song writing not the performance of the song which truely is the gift. my question is does taylor swift really write these songs she sings?

To me, there's 2 categories: Singers and Singer/ Songwriters. Elvis, Aretha and Sinatra could take a song and breathe a whole new life into to it, by their unique voicings and phrasing. It's what seperates them from all the other great singers, who aren't considered legends. I, prefer, singer/songwriters myself, but singers have their place, too.

You will get a wide variety of answers both ways....Bing Crosby has the most selling record of all time - White Christmas - and it was not written by him; also, some of the work by michael jackson and the beatles were co written with them

no. legendary status is up to history to decide. if they are treated like a legend, then they are a legend. and frank sinatra is legendary for being an a'sshole and a womanizer even if he didn't write his own songs

Nope there is more to being a legend than just writing your own songs and if your good enough you can make it.
